5.5×8.5 2H Pencil & White Prismacolor Verithin

This is just about the quality of drawings I wanna fill this sketchbook with. They seem to have the same feel as my Prismacolor marker busts, which I love. The technique is similar. I scribble some light lines (2H is perfect for this) and find some sort of form in the chaos. I start to darken the shadow areas, being careful not to go too dark too fast. I tried to use the white pencil, in this case a Verithin by Prismacolor, as soon as I could so I didn’t accidentally go over the light areas because toned surface 101; graphite and white don’t like each other.

I started another drawing using a Derwent Chinese white pencil and I like it way better. I wouldn’t recommend the Verithins. I just couldn’t find anything else at the time.

I spent about 15 minutes getting reacquainted with the medium. I posted this to my Instagram and one fellow artist said “Frazetta meets Cubone.”… it earned this drawing a blog post

I forgot to mention in last post that I also use micron pens. But yeah. Really diggin’ the flow of this process.

The first one is just to illustrate a bit of my process. I use a 30% French grey Prismacolor marker and really just go wild with it. Big broad strokes until I start to see something in the mess. Then I go back in and darken where I need to. I’m pretty sure I’ve explained the process before, but I’ll repeat it for anyone who hasn’t read my older posts. Does anyone even read these?

Anyways. On the second phase, the marker was completely dried so the values were a bit lighter. I went back in with the same 30% French grey and pushed the darks (the wonderful thing about Prismacolor markers). Finally, I tried something new and added some even darker values with graphite pencil, instead of just adding line work like I usually do. Loved the way these two mediums worked together.

Fun. Of course. Acrylic inks are kinda like watercolors but you can layer a lot faster. Its also the bad part about it. If you don’t work wet enough, you will get streaks. I need more practice with it though to say for sure.

I’m still pretty new to inking, but I have to say it was something I enjoyed doing. The big shadow shapes were done with India ink and brush and the hatching was done with micron pens. With the exception of a few spots, when I was still trying to grasp the technique.

I remember being so involved in this project. I wish I could write a full story for these characters and their world.

This was done pretty quickly, mostly to freshen up on Illustrator. Everything was from scratch. I could have just used some of the symbols that come with the program, but I needed the practice.

I’ve recently made the real tough decision to drop out of the 2 classes I was registered in this spring semester (hence the title of post) and I’m using the time to snap some images of some old art I’ve never shared.

This piece here I did in an Intro to Anatomy class a few years back with the amazing John Wentz

I remember having to stay after school for this one, setting up my own lighting, choosing any spot in the empty class, throwing my headphones, and nailing an A on it. God I wish I had a big studio. Anyways, hope you like.

Had to post more than once this month. This is a 2 hour portrait done in class. I really miss sitting there peacefully hatching away, listening to music. I might repost if I can get a better shot. Tried shooting my own art today. Lighting is the hardest part :/

Another scribbled bust from yesterday. This kinda took on a minotaur form. My favorite part is the horns. It was so “out-of-the-box” for me.

And 2… My art is now on Facebook! I don’t want to flood social media with the same images so it’s going a little something like this… my Instagram feed (@mrangelperez) will be cropped and most likely filtered images and hardly ever described, the Facebook page will be of more frequent sketches and unfinished doodles (uncropped), and my blog will be where I write about images worth writing about See ya.

I didn’t really want to make a Facebook page and post on my personal profile instead, but I can’t connect that URL to the WordPress widgets :/
